Cloudy days result in darker colours whereas sunny weather will lend to lighter colours. Prevent the Altitude Sicknes!!

Altitude sickness also known as mountain sickness or Soroche is a bad physical being due to lack of adaptation of the organism to high altitudes and the increase of atmospheric pressure in large altitudes.That is the reason why it is advisable to take a coca leaves tea before leaving t our adventure or take a pill that helps fight this evil. If you feel bad during the trek, please do not hesitate to inform our guide, he is trained to help you.



Rainbow Mountain

Early at morning, approximately 3 - 4 a.m we  will pick you up from your Hotel to start the adventure!! We will start going to the town of Checacupe,to  then take the road to Pitumarca. After a repairing breakfast we will continue on our way to Pampachiri located at 3800 m.a.s.l, where we will start the trek from approximately 3 to 4 hours. The road is full of beautiful landscapes and variety of Andean camelids that delight the view forgetting a little the slope of the route. Once in the mountain Vinicunca or also called Rainbow Mountain, we will have a brief conversation with the guide who will explain the reason for the coloration and also have a privileged view of the Snow Mountain Ausangate. After the respective photos we proceed to the descent, then have lunch and go back to the city of Cusco.

When is the best time to visit the Rainbow Mountain

What to do at Rainbow Mountain?

The Mountain of the 7 Colors offers one of the most incredible natural landscapes in the world. These are some of the things to do in this magical place:

  • Enjoy the characteristic fauna of high Andean landscapes such as llamas, vicuñas, alpacas, vizcachas, condors and more.
  • Live one of the most memorable extreme adventures. The Vinicunca is above 5 thousand meters above sea level.

Vinicunca by your own:

  • Wanchaq to Checacupe:
    From very early (3:30 a.m.) the traveler will depart from the city of Cusco to Huayruropata Avenue in Wanchaq. There you will find a land terminal located in front of the Garcilaso Stadium. This bus will take you to Checacupe in approximately two and a half hours.
  • Checacupe to Pitumarca:
    As soon as you arrive at Checacupe you must embark on the buses that are parked in the Main Square of the city and that will take you to Pitumarca. The trip will last 15 minutes and the frequency of departure is every 20 minutes.
  • Pitumarca to Chillca:
    The vehicles depart from the main square of Pitumarca towards Chillca, the trip will last approximately two and a half hours.
  • Chillca - Vinicunca:
    Our destiny is getting closer. To get to this wonderful mountain, you must depart from Chillca in the services of muleteers, the same ones who know the area much better and will guide you to Vinicunca. After the intense walk of approximately two hours, you will finally arrive at the majestic rainbow mountain.


Some facts about trekking to Vinicunca

It is important to know that, regardless of how you approach the trek, it reaches up to 5100 meters at the Vinicunca viewpoint. The path that is still more frequent (that of the Pitumarca route) is 8 kilometers and, as we say, it can take about three hours. Other altitudes (meters above sea level) that could be of interest to you:

  • Start of the trip in the city of Cusco - 3399 meters above sea level.
  • Checacupe - 3430 masl.
  • Pitumarca - 3570 masl.
  • Starting point of the beginning of the trek in Pampachiri - 4530 masl.
  • Mountain of the 7 Colors - 5020 meters above sea level.
  • Viewpoint of the Mountain of the 7 Colors - 5100 ma.s.l.

With these altitudes, regardless of the physical shape of each one and the path you choose, it is VERY important to have a possible altitude sickness controlled, so we encourage you to take a look of a guide to avoid the altitude sickness. And, of course, to take with you a good travel insurance.
